Why Use the IonPac AG11-HC Guard?

The AG11-HC guard column uses the same packing material as the AS11-HC analytical column, ensuring no change in selectivity when added to the system. It traps sample contaminants, particulates, and strongly retained matrix components before they can foul or damage the analytical column.

Retention times increase by approximately 2% when the guard is installed — a minor trade-off for significantly extended column life. Replacing a guard column is faster, easier, and far less expensive than replacing the analytical column.

When to Replace:

Replace the AG11-HC guard column at the first sign of peak efficiency loss, increased back pressure, or decreased retention times. For complex matrices (wastewater, food extracts), guard column replacement may be needed every 200–500 injections.
